# Bertrand can be England’s starting left-back, says Bridge

Former Southampton and Chelsea full-back Wayne Bridge has [spoke](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/625426/Southampton-Ryan-Bertrand-Chelsea-Ashley-Cole-Wayne-Bridge-News) of how he believes that the in-form Saints left-back Ryan Bertrand has the potential to be as good as ex-Chelsea and England man, Ashley Cole.

Bridge, who came from Southampton’s prestigious academy, made 151 appearances for the south-coast club, as well as 87 for Chelsea, believes that Bertrand has what it takes to be England’s starting left-back.

> I was at Chelsea with Ryan and back then I thought he was a really good player. You could see he had something about him.

> I think he has proven himself to be a tremendous signing since he has moved to Southampton, he was just what they needed when they lost Luke Shaw.

Bridge believes that given Luke Shaw’s devastating double leg-break in October, Bertrand is the first choice candidate to secure a place on the left-hand side of the defence at Euro 2016 in the summer.

> With Luke out for the rest of the season I think Ryan could definitely secure a spot in the England squad next year.

> He has the potential to be just as good as Ashley (Cole) was for England.
