Steven Davis looking forward to next summer

Southampton midfielder has said that he will be proud to represent, and captain, his Country at next summer’s European Championships in France.

The Northern Ireland international scored the only goal of the game last night as his side beat Latvia 1-0 in their first game at Windsor Park since they qualified for their first major tournament since 1986.

Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland in their qualifying campaign in which they topped the group, with the Southampton man scoring two of their goals in the 3-1 win over Greece which secured their place at next summer’s Championships.

In the process, he will become the first ever man to captain Northern Ireland at a European Championships and Davis has spoken about how much of an honour it will be for him to lead his Country out against some of the best Countries in the world.

I think I look back at the World Cup captains from before and take inspiration from them.

[I’m] obviously delighted and very proud to wear the armband. Very proud just to play for Northern Ireland, to lead the team and qualify for the major tournament. I’m really looking forward to leading the team out in France.

It’s huge. If you look back, we’ve never qualified for the Euros before. The last time we qualified for the World Cup was in 1986, so it tells you how difficult it has been.

Could Northern Ireland be the dark horses next summer in France?
