# Stekelenburg happy with Dutch call up

Southampton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has admitted his delight at being called up to the Holland national side for their upcoming friendlies against Wales and Germany.

Stekelenburg’s call up last month was due to injuries to Tim Krul and Jasper Cillessen. That call up was his first since 2013. However, with now only Krul out injured for Danny Blind’s side, it was thought that the Saints shot-stopper may not make the squad.

He has kept back to back Premier League clean sheets against Bournemouth and Sunderland for the first time this season and has helped Southampton to an eight match unbeaten run that they are currently on.

Stekelenburg spoke to [Southampton’s YouTube channel](https://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/20151109-maarten-stekelenburg-southampton-netherlands-call-2791972.aspx) about his call up to the national side:

> My first aim was to play games, because last year I didn’t do that a lot, and I want to play good, and if you do that, the national team, the chance gets bigger to come back.

> Last time, when I was called up last month, it was a little bit different because you get two injured goalkeepers, so I was expecting it a little bit as well.

> But now we have only Krul injured and everybody’s fit again, so I’m happy to get the call up.

With Holland having done so poorly in the qualifying campaign for next summers European Championships, failing to even make the play-offs, Stekelenburg may have a chance of starting the friendlies.
