Former Southampton youth product and Premier League legend Alan Shearer has hailed Virgil Van Dijk and the impact that the Dutchman has made at Southampton since he joined in the summer from SPL champions Celtic.
The Match Of The Day pundit has praised Van Dijk for his superb influence on the Southampton back-line that has seen Southampton lose just once in the ten games that Van Dijk has played for the Saints, which was 3-2 to Manchester United.
Van Dijk has formed a superb partnership with Southampton captain Jose Fonte in central defence, a partnership that is slowly becoming one of the most formidable in the league.
I doubt that there are too many strikers in the Premier League, or teams for that matter, that would want to come up against Southampton on current form. Teams get very few chances against Van Dijk and Fonte and here is what Alan Shearer said about the Dutch defenders impact on the South Coast.
They are on a great run.
They are unbeaten away from home and Virgil Van Dijk has made a difference. In the 10 games that he has played they have only lost once, and they are having a very good season again.
They were miles the better team [against Sunderland]. They sell a lot of players, but they keep on improving. It is remarkable stuff.
