# Southampton wanted Depay – Koeman

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has [revealed](https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/manchester-united-ronald-koeman-reveals-southampton-tried-sign-memphis-depay-2014-1524784) that he tried to sign Manchester United winger Memphis Depay in the summer of 2014, when he was still at PSV.

Memphis signed for Louis Van Gaal’s side this summer for a fee believed to be over £20m from the Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven. However, it could have been a different story for the 21-year-old Dutchman.

Koeman has said that he was interested in bringing him to St.Mary’s when Koeman first took over on the south coast. However, Depay was not ready to leave PSV at that point and Koeman was told that the mercurial winger was staying in Holland for at least another season before he moved abroad.

This proved true as Depay stayed for the whole of last season as PSV won the league and then he joined Manchester United this summer.

Speaking about his previous interest, Ronald Koeman said:

> It is true, we were interested in Memphis Depay last year but we heard from his management that he wanted to stay one more year in Holland (at PSV) and then take the opportunity to play for a foreign club.

Would you have liked to have seen Memphis in a Saints shirt?
