There have been many success stories that have come out of Southampton’s youth development, but prospect Jason McCarthy has said that he wants to follow in the footsteps of friend, Matt Targett.
McCarthy, 19, recently joined League 2 outfit Wycombe Wanderers on a one-month loan deal from Southampton, and is just one of many talents who have stemmed from St Mary’s.
Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers are players who have recently earned big moves through honing their skills with the Saints.
In the summer transfer window of 2014-15, Shaw and Chambers earned moves to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, but it’s Left-back Targett who McCarthy looks up to.

McCarthy is impressed with Targett’s 12 league appearances for the saints, saying: “I still keep in touch with all the lads who came through at Southampton, like Luke Shaw and Chambers, but my best friend is Matt Targett, who is doing really well at the moment.”
One of the reasons McCarthy joined Wycombe was because of the similar playing styles both Wycombe and Southampton U21s possess.
“I know Wycombe are a good club who do things the right way, and they play a similar way to how we do in the U21s at Southampton, getting the ball down and playing in the right areas.”
McCarthy does understand the difference in League 2 football, however, adding: “I imagine the games will be a bit more high tempo and in your face.”
