# Davis delighted with first goal in almost 2 years

Steven Davis scored his first goal in almost 2 years versus Chelsea last night in Southampton’s 3-1 win over the Premier League champions.

It was Davis’ first goal in 602 days as a Southampton player and was just his fifth league goal for the club in over 100 league appearances for Southampton.

The Northern Irish international midfielder isn’t known for his goalscoring prowess and has been such a reliable servant to the Saints since joining on a free transfer from Rangers back in 2012.

The 30-year-old scored the equalizer for Southampton, rifling the ball home from the edge of the box superbly after a fine bit of centre forward play by Graziano Pelle to lay the ball off to him.

His goal came in the 43rd minute, almost the perfect time for a Southampton leveler just before half-time and then Southampton were able to come out in the second half and win the game with goals from Mane and Pelle to secure a 3-1 win.

Speaking to [Saintsfc.co.uk](https://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/20151003-steven-davis-post-chelsea-southampton-2726246.aspx), Steven Davis had this to say:

“I thought I’d save the goal for a good occasion,”

“It has been a frustrating time, but I had a good chance early on and snatched at it.

“I was disappointed with that. It was a great lay-off from Graziano \[Pellè\] and it was nice to see it hit the back of the net. Hopefully it’s the start of a few more to come.

“I think getting the goal before half time meant the belief started to come back into us. We showed in the second half that we fully deserved the win and caused them a number of problems.

“It took us a little bit of time to find out feet in the game but it’s important we start to show the consistency that we did last season.

“It was nice to follow up the Swansea win with a big result here against Chelsea.”

“I thought the second half was very good,” Davis added. “Sadio started to find pockets of space and we know he can cause all sorts of problems.

“We were unlucky not to go ahead before we did, but we kept plugging away.

“Defensively I thought every man did their job. It’s important you stay compact against a team like Chelsea.

“It was a great performance and a deserved three points.”

Davis will now travel away with Northern Ireland this week as they look to fight for a Euro 2016 spot.
