# Summer transfer round-up

The summer transfer deadline came and went yesterday and Southampton fans can look back on what was a very active window, as usual, for the Saints.

With players departing and arriving, Ronald Koeman has been very busy in the last few months. Southampton signed nine players (including loans) and let go of nine players (not including loans).

Southampton managed to amass a total of £36.89m from sales. The majority of that coming from the sale of Morgan Schneirderlin to Manchester United for a reported fee of £24.5m.

Ronald Koeman spent almost all of the incomings on new arrivals, spending a total of £35.98m, just shy of £1m of what they brought in.

Virgil Van Dijk was Southampton’s most expensive summer signing at £10.99 from Celtic on deadline day.

Other notable purchases for Southampton included Jordy Clasie for £8.4m and Romeu and Juanmi both for £4.9m each.

Southampton have brought in Stekelenburg and Caulker on loans from Championship sides Fulham and QPR respectively.

Their last two signings were fullbacks Cedric from Sporting for £4.55m and Cuco Martina from FC Twente for £1.05m. Although Southampton did bring in Harry Lewis from Shrewsbury for an undisclosed fee, he will be working with the u18’s rather than near Ronald Koeman’s first team for the foreseeable future at just 17 years old.

Southampton may have sold two influential and key players in Schneiderlin and Clyne but look to have invested well. Oriol Romeu has already had a fine start to his Saints career in Schneiderlin’s position and same for Cedric in Clyne’s.

Stekelenburg was brought in as cover for Forster’s injury and has already looked the part for Saints in the opening games.

The loss of Alderweireld after Southampton were unable to make his move permanent and Florin Gardos picking up a lengthy injury left Southampton lacking in the centre of defence. Caulker and Van Dijk have been brought in to fill the gap. Caulker has not had a blistering start to his Saints career, not being able to get in the team over Yoshida. However, Virgil Van Dijk comes in very highly rated and is likely to take the other spot at the back alongside Fonte in the Premier League.

In my opinion, it was a very successful transfer window for the Saints and Southampton have a great chance of another top ten finish, even after their shaky start to the season.

Are you happy with Saints transfer dealings?
