Southampton have signed Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie from Feyenoord on a five-year deal, keeping him at the club until 2020.
The fee for the Dutch international is believed to be around £7 million with it eventually rising to £8.5m with add-ons, Ronald Koeman joins up with the former Feyenoord Captain.
The 24-year-old is Southampton’s fifth signing this transfer window – he will look to fit in with his fellow newcomers Cedric Soares, Juanmi, Cuco Martina, Maarten Stekelenburg.
With this signing Southampton have spent around £20 million in total – raking in over £35 million in sales since the end of last season.
The Dutch international is a quick, agile midfielder who plays very aggressively and does not hesitate with the ball. He had the highest tackle success rate in the Eredivisie last season (over 89%), so looks the ideal replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin – who joined Manchester United at the beginning of this week.
Fans can also look forward to Clasie working alongside Harrison Reed – both have similar positions, play style and stature.
The Clasie signing shows that Southampton are not trying to ride the coat tails of last season, rather reload for the coming season. The departures of Clyne and Schneiderlin are inevitable for a club like Southampton who must try to run a business and do not have the luxury of being a top-four club.
