Southampton are closing in on a deal to sign Cedric Soares after agreeing a deal with Sporting Lisbon, according to Tony Barrett of The Times.
The Saints had initially faced competition for the right back from fellow Premier League side Stoke City but it now seems that Southampton have firmed up their interest in the Portuguese player.
Soares is a diminutive full back who has spent most of his career at Lisbon. He went out on loan to Academica for one season in 2011. He made over 60 appearances during his time at Lisbon.
Although he was born in Germany, he has four international caps for Portugal after making his debut against France in October 2014.
Soares’ arrival seemingly paves the way for Nathaniel Clyne’s move to Liverpool. The England international was heavily sought-after by a few clubs including Liverpool and Manchester United. Southampton had rejected Liverpool’s initial offer but it is understood that the Merseyside club will return with a bigger bid.
