Toby Alderweireld’s future with Southampton continues to become more unclear with the recent news that Chelsea are now interested in the defender as a potential replacement for the underwhelming Filipe Luis.
Originally, as part of the initial loan deal, Southampton could’ve retain Alderweireld’s services by paying Atletico Madrid £7 million, but Atletico can opt out of this by paying the Saints £1.3million.
Alderweireld has been quoted saying, “Southampton gave me that opportunity and it paid off, I think. I’ve had a fantastic year, I can’t lie about that, so, yes, I’d like to stay in the Premier League.” This is probably the most likely scenario with other English giants Tottenham and Manchester City rumoured to be in for the the 26-year-old as well.
The Belgian International made 26 appearances for Southampton and was a large part of the stout defensive unit that allowed only 33 goals; the second lowest in the Premier League.
With the heavily rumoured departures of Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin, Alderweireld could be an important player who could provide stability with the potential turnover. The coming weeks will be crucial to deciding the futures of these promising players.
