Mark Hughes has admitted that he ‘would love’ to stay at Southampton beyond the end of his existing contract.
The Welshman has successfully led the club to Premier League survival after taking over in March following the hugely uninspiring reign of Mauricio Pellegrino.
Hughes signed an interim deal at Southampton and was brought in to keep the club’s Premier League status intact. The 54-year-old has achieved this aim and talks between the manager and the club’s top brass will be held in the coming days.

Speaking after his side’s final day defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, as quoted by the Telegraph, Hughes confessed that he’d ‘love’ to sign a new, long-term contract at St Mary’s.
I have been able to make an impact. I’m a professional football manager and I would love the opportunity. I would imagine the club have had discussions probably ever since I walked through the door in terms of what they would do.
There were two scenarios if we went down or we stayed up. My view is they will make a quick decision one way or the other. If it involves me I will be delighted.
Wins over Bournemouth and Swansea along with draws against Leicester and Everton proved to be enough for Saints to avoid the drop down to the Championship, with Hughes’ men finishing the season in 17th place.
