The Football Association will hold talks with Mark Hughes so the Saints manager can explain his comments about referee Jon Moss.
The Telegraph report that Hughes could be faced with a charge after implying that Moss was not fit enough to keep up with play.
The Southampton manager was left frustrated after his side let a 1-0 lead slip in the final moments of their game at Everton.

The Saints looked set to take what would have been a crucial three points in their bid to stay up, but a late Tom Davies goal denied them.
Hughes was angered by the decision to give a free-kick in Everton’s favour after a foul from Nathan Redmond, only for it to be taken ten yards away from where the incident took place.
When asked if he would speak to the referee after the game, Hughes replied, “No, what is the point. Probably getting his breath back.”
Southampton know that they must beat Swansea on Tuesday night in a bid to survive.
