Our man of the match: Wigan (A)
Southampton progressed through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup yesterday as they defeated Wigan Athletic away from home.
Mark Hughes opted to play a 4-4-2 formation in his first game in charge of Saints and after what was a diabolical first-half showing, the Welshman secured his first win as Southampton boss.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg opened the scoring after connecting well with Dusan Tadic’s corner. In stoppage time, Cedric Soares netted a swift counter-attack in style, to send Saints through with a 2-0 win despite Manolo Gabbiadini’s penalty having been saved.
Few players stood out on the day for Saints but it was a resilient, gritty performance from the team as they worked hard for each other. The standout performer, though, was Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The young midfielder grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and in large periods dictated the tempo from deep. Hojbjerg was aggressive and pressed well in tight spaces.
Hughes partnered the youngster next to Mario Lemina and the pair worked well together. Hojbjerg contributed at both ends of the pitch and he was well worth his first goal in a Southampton shirt.
The 22-year-old has been an exemplary pro throughout the course of what has been a treacherous campaign. He has acted with pride, displayed a tremendous work ethic and has deserved his more involved role this term.
Hojbjerg, whether he’s wearing the captain’s armband or not, leads by example and he is an absolute credit to Southampton Football Club.
