Hughes lauds Saints fans as ‘magnificent’ in Wigan win
Southampton manager Mark Hughes has hailed the club’s supporters following the 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic on Sunday.
Hughes spoke to the club’s official website after the game and was full of praise for the travelling Saints faithful, as upwards of 4,000 fans travelled in treacherous conditions to see the team progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
The Saints fans have come out in huge numbers and the support we had was magnificent. We thank each and every one of them, because it’s clearly not been an easy period for anybody with allegiances to Southampton FC.
Goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares, both of whom netted for the first time in a Southampton shirt, in the second-half were enough to help Saints to a 2-0 win in the quarter-finals of the illustrious competition.
Hughes got off to the perfect start and was backed by the Saints supporters throughout, with the Welshman hoping to turn the season around at St Mary’s.
I like to think this was a reflection of what this group can do for them – we just need their support from now until the end of the season. If we get that, which I’m sure we will on the evidence of today, and everybody’s in it together, we will be fine.
The same kind of backing from the Southampton fans is sure to be important in the final stretch of the season, with Saints looking to avoid relegation and achieve FA Cup glory.
