Newcastle vs Southampton: Last time out
Southampton have another stern test in their relegation fight, as they prepare to face Newcastle United this weekend.
The Magpies sit one place above Saints in the league, with a single point separating the two sides as things stand. Victory at St James’ Park would be crucial and would land more pressure on the North-East side.
Last time Saints made the long trip up North, Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side earned a point, thanks to a late Shane Long equaliser.
Saints took the lead when Graziano Pelle rose highest to meet a Cedric cross, before Papiss Cisse brought things level just before half-time.
Shortly after the interval, Newcastle’s new £14.5 million signing Georginio Wijnaldum powered a header into the top corner after a swift counter-attack, giving the hosts the lead.
But the visitors snatched a point when Shane Long headed home Dusan Tadic’s cross 10 minutes from time.
Saints were unlucky not to take all three points back to the South Coast, but resilient defending saw Sadio Mane denied twice at the death.
