Southampton’s French defender Jeremy Pied is set to get his first start of the season after defender Cedric Soares was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in the match against Manchester City on Wednesday night, according to the Southern Daily Echo.
The 28-year-old has not played a single minute in the Premier League with his only first-team action being in the Carabao Cup defeat in the second round against Wolves in September.
Saints have got a number of options of who could fill in at full-back with Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Mario Lemina all having the capability to fill in for Cedric.
Speaking about the situation Mauricio Pellegrino said:
Jeremy Pied will play. I feel most of my players are ready to play right now. Jeremy has played with the reserves and has trained well, he’s one of the examples in the squad in the way that he trains every single day without being on the list for most of the games.
He continued by adding;
It’s really difficult to keep the motivation, and he will have the opportunity to show how he’s competing now.
When you play one game in 15 it’s not easy, but the team will try to support him to try to play well.
The right-back signed for the club back in 2016 but has seen opportunities be very limited while he was sidelined for a large proportion of last season and he now has a perfect chance to prove himself in the Premier League.
Pellegrino feels the player is ready for the challenge stating;
I told him that he will play, because I feel he’s ready to do it, prepared to do it, well prepared to do it,
