Southampton have been linked with an unlikely move for Fernando Torres.
According to a rather surprising report from the Mirror, Saints have been put on ‘red alert’, with claims that the experienced Spanish striker wants to return to the Premier League.
Torres has never hit the heights he did at Liverpool during his first spell in England and has since gone on to play for Chelsea, AC Milan and now Atletico Madrid.
The striker is now 33-years-old and appears to be seeking a new challenge with game time limited at Atletico.
It’s claimed that Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino could be keen to move for Torres given that the pair worked together at Liverpool during his brightest spell as a player.
However, the links do come across as far-fetched given several factors. It’s likely that Torres would be on rather high wages at Atletico, and signing a 33-year-old would not be a decision that coincides with Saints’ usual business model.
The report does indicate, however, that the proposed deal would only be a temporary one. Torres is said to be keen on retiring at the end of his deal in 2019 but wants to find sufficient playing time elsewhere prior to his final season with Atletico.
In short, it seems unlikely that Torres will be making the trip down to St Mary’s, but Newcastle are also cited with interest. The Atletico man could be tempted by a reunion with his old boss and compatriot, Rafa Benitez.
