Our man of the match: West Ham (H)
Southampton picked up their first win of the season with a stoppage time winner against West Ham on Saturday.
The Saints ran out 3-2 winners, with a Charlie Austin penalty in the 93rd minute securing the three points.
Manolo Gabbiadini opened his account for the season. The Italian ran onto the end of Nathan Redmond’s pass and slotted home to make it 1-0.
Mark Arnautovic was then sent off for West Ham. The forward needlessly elbowed Jack Stephens in the face as the young defender passed the ball.
A foul by ex-Saints captain Jose Fonte on Steven Davis then gave Dusan Tadic to double the lead, as he placed the ball straight down the middle of the goal.
The Hammers pulled one back at the end of the first-half. Javier Hernandez followed up a weak parry from Fraser Forster.
West Ham then managed to make it 2-2 in the 74th minute. Maya Yoshida was beaten in the air by Michail Antonio, with his header followed up by Hernandez again to score.
Southampton were handed the perfect chance to win the game in stoppage time as Pablo Zabaleta appeared to shove Yoshida in the area.
Charlie Austin stepped up and sent Joe Hart the wrong way, rolling the ball into the bottom right corner.
Picking a man of the match has been hard, with no real standouts for the Saints.
But our Southampton man of the match is… Steven Davis!
I didn’t have him in my predicted XI but he certainly put in a performance worthy of starting!
The Saints skipper was working hard from the first whistle and was pivotal in retaining possession and moving the side forward.
He won the penalty for Tadic’s goal and looked sharp throughout. It’s hard to see him losing his place if he keeps producing displays like this.
