Southampton captain Virgil Van Dijk has handed in a transfer request to leave the club, Henry Winter has revealed.

This comes after much speculation over his future in recent months, including a debacle with Liverpool.
The Merseyside club were forced to issue an apology and ‘end their interest’ in Van Dijk after being accused of tapping the Dutch defender up.

It was reported that Van Dijk met Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to discuss a move to the Anfield side, without Southampton’s permission.
Les Reed has since come out to say that Van Dijk will not be sold this summer, with the club in control of his situation.
This has forced Van Dijk’s hand, who has now requested to leave the club, despite being named team captain back in January.
Van Dijk signed a six-year contract extension last summer.
