Southampton Football Club have today confirmed that Jack Stephens has penned a new long-term five-year contract with the club.
The former England Under-21 international broke into the first-team last season under Claude Puel, filling in as Saints had something of a defensive crisis.
Stephens slotted in next to Maya Yoshida and the pair proved to be a formidable force, holding their own at the back for Saints after Jose Fonte was sold and Virgil van Dijk suffered a long-term injury.
The former Plymouth defender made his first ever start for Southampton in the Premier League against Everton and went on to make several appearances from late January onwards.
Given his excellent displays last season, Stephens is sure to have made an impression on those higher up at Saints. It’s likely that he’ll be a part of Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans ahead of the upcoming season.
Stephens will look to build upon the 2016/17 campaign and enjoy another good term on the South Coast.
