Southampton striker Shane Long is set to miss the one last remaining fixture of the season against Stoke after scans revealed that he has fractured his foot.

According to a report from the Irish Independent, Long suffered a blow to his foot in Saints’ 2-1 win over Middlesbrough last weekend, hence his exclusion from the matchday squad that drew 0-0 to Manchester United in midweek, and is now set to miss at least a month’s worth of action.

The injury is to keep Long out of contention for Republic of Ireland’s upcoming clashes, and the report states that the experienced striker will miss his country’s game against Austria on June 11, reinforcing the severity of the injury.

Quite how his loss will affect the outcome of the clash wish Stoke, we will wait and see. Southampton will still be favourites for the game and will be the name on the lips of those providing betting tips.

Long’s injury comes at a slightly less pressing time for Saints with regards to their attacking depth, given that Charlie Austin has returned to fitness and there is just one remaining game of the season.

The 30-year-old will look to be fit for pre-season.
