Southampton will be gearing up for the biggest game of their season so far as they take the trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg.
Saints head into the game with a precious advantage, going in 1-0 up on aggregate after Nathan Redmond fired home the decisive goal earlier on in the month at St Mary’s in the first leg.
However, it’s sure to be a colossal test for Claude Puel’s men who will look to defend their lead on Merseyside, with the total expectation that Jurgen Klopp’s team are going to throw everything at them to progress further in the cup.
A draw for Saints would be enough on the night and if there is just a one goal deficit in Liverpool’s favour but the visitors have scored, they will progress after extra time.
Here is how I expect Saints to line up on Wednesday evening.
Fraser Forster
Forster will retain his place in goal.
Cedric Soares
I think I’ll cry if Cuco Martina starts.
Jack Stephens
With the expected absence of Virgil van Dijk, it leaves Stephens to fill some incredibly large boots. It’ll be a big occasion for him and I hope he thrives from it.
Maya Yoshida
Yoshida has been very good recently and he could very well wear the captain’s armband on the night if injuries don’t treat Saints well.
Ryan Bertrand
Although I’d have full confidence in Sam McQueen, we need Bertrand’s big-game experience.
Oriol Romeu
Romeu will be crucial if Saints are to progress. He cannot be rotated.
James Ward-Prowse
It’s looking as though Steven Davis could still miss out, so Ward-Prowse is likely to retain his place.
Jordy Clasie
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is set to drop to the bench, with Clasie coming back into the side.
Dusan Tadic
Tadic will be key in creating chances for Saints, as they may be highly scarce.
Jay Rodriguez
Rodriguez is likely to just get into the team ahead of Shane Long.
Nathan Redmond
Redmond will start and look to use his pace to hurt Liverpool.
