Southampton will take a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final after they beat Liverpool at St Mary’s tonight.
The Saints recorded an impressive 1-0 win against The Reds this evening, on a night where they could have scored more.
Claude Puel’s side had all of the big chances in the match and, if it were not for some heroics from Loris Karius, could have scored three or four.
The only goal of the game came in the 20th minute. Jay Rodriguez slipped the ball through to Nathan Redmond and the summer signing coolly dispatched a finish into the bottom corner.
Redmond was later denied on a couple of occasions by Karius, and then the crossbar, with Rodriguez and Tadic also coming close for the Saints.
There were a number of good performers for the Saints, so picking a man of the match was very difficult.
Special mentions to Maya Yoshida, Nathan Redmond and Jay Rodriguez – who were superb – but I have to go for the main man Virgil Van Dijk.
He’s been in monolithic form this season at the back for the Saints and continued that tonight.
Van Dijk was incredible in the air, as always, and won countless tackles on the deck against Liverpool’s forwards.
It’s hard to single out one player, as everyone on the pitch for Southampton was excellent, but Van Dijk is always a class above.
