On Wednesday, Southampton host Sunderland in the round of 16 in the EFL cup.
In the last round, Saints beat Crystal Palace on home turf with Charlie Austin and young midfielder Jake Hesketh getting on the scoresheet.
Rotation will be in the mind of boss Claude Puel, as this fixture will be the third Saints have played within a week, after away games against Inter Milan and Manchester City in the Europa League and Premier League respectively.
Three of Southampton’s first choice full-backs in the form of Cedric Soares, Matt Targett and Ryan Bertrand have been ruled out of the game with injury, with Cuco Martina and Sam McQueen set to replace them for the third game running.
Record signing Sofiane Boufal will be hoping to make his first start in a Saints shirt after making substitute appearances against Inter and City.
So, here is how we have come up with a combined line-up between Saints and their visitors for Wednesday.
Fraser Forster
Forster gets in the side ahead of young Jordan Pickford or Sunderland’s backup ‘keeper Mika.
Cuco Martina
Saints’ third choice right-back Cuco Martina has been brilliant whilst Cedric Soares has been out with injury.
Lamine Kone
After much debate over his Sunderland future over the summer, Kone has stayed put at the club and gets into this team.
Virgil van Dijk
Adds some dominance to the back-line. The Dutch centre-back has started all Southampton’s games this season.
Patrick Van Aanholt
Van Aanholt was one of the only current Sunderland players to play in the 8-0 loss to Southampton in 2014/15. Due to left-back issues with Saints, he gets into the team.
Oriol Romeu
Southampton’s best player of the season so far, for me, and has played a major part in the recent good form.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
The young midfielder eases his way into this side.
Wahbi Khazri
One of Sunderland’s best players at the minute, who has pace and the skill to glide past defenders.
Dusan Tadic
Saint’s midfield maestro, Tadic has been creating brilliant chances constantly for his teammates.
Sofiane Boufal
Southampton’s club record signing who is yet to make a start for the club. Boufal has made substitution appearances in Southampton’s last two games. His wizardry and flair on the ball is an asset.
Jermain Defoe
Gave Sunderland the lead after scoring a penalty against Southampton in the third week of the Premier League. He’s still got it!
