According to recent reports from Italian news outlet Calciomercato earlier today, Southampton were one of many clubs to have made an offer for Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter in the summer.

The young Germany international has always been touted for big things and given his versatility and ability to play well at both right-back and centre-back, it comes as no surprise to see that Saints did make a move for the defender.

It was reported in July that Southampton were taking an interest in Ginter but that was the last that was heard of the rumours, with Dortmund appearing keen to keep hold of the promising defender.

The report from Calciomercato suggests that West Ham and German side Borussia Monchengladbach had also both made offers for Ginter in the close season transfer window but their proposals were swiftly turned away by Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel.

AC Milan are also claimed to be holding strong interest in the report, with a January move in mind.
