Southampton made their way into the next stage of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.

The Saints progressed through to the last 16 of the EFL Cup. They will now face Sunderland at St.Mary’s on the week beginning October 24th.

Claude Puel’s side dominated in large spells and looked, by far, the better of the two sides. Crystal Palace rarely threatened during the match, with Alex McCarthy having little to do in goal for the Saints.

The home side were handed the perfect chance to take the lead when Martin Kelly swiped down Shane Long in the box. Charlie Austin then stepped up to confidently stroke home his fourth goal in three games.

The win was then sealed in the second half when 20-year-old Jake Hesketh scored his first senior goal for the club as he pounced on a loose ball in the box.

There were many good performers for the Saints, but I have to go with Jake Hesketh as my man of the match.

The 20-year-old was handed a, surprise, start by Claude Puel showing that the Frenchman rates the youngster.

Hesketh repaid Puel’s faith by turning in a superb performance against Palace. He created a number of good chances for the Saints, as well as scoring his first senior goal with a composed finish in the box to make it 2-0.
