Cedric happy to sign new contract
Cedric Soares has spoken of his delight at signing a new contract with the club today.
The 24-year-old has signed a new four-year contract, taking his deal until 2020.
Speaking to Southampton’s website, Cedric Soares said this about his new deal:
I’m really happy. The club has given me more confidence and they show me that they also trust in my football.
I am really happy to be part of this club and be part of this family as well.
Cedric was signed in the final year of his contract at Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon and made a good start to life in the Premier League.
Cedric did, however, lose his place at times last season, with Cuco Martina being in favour ahead of him under Ronald Koeman. However, he has been Claude Puel’s first choice right back since the Frenchman took over this summer.
The Portugal defender will be in good spirits heading into the new season after helping his native Portugal to a historic Euro 2016 win, alongside Saints captain and teammate Jose Fonte.
This is what Puel had to say about Cedric’s new long-term contract with the club:
It’s good news for the club, for Cédric and for all the team. He is an international player, he has won EURO 2016 with Portugal and it’s important for the club to keep players of his calibre.
I’m happy for him and for us to keep Cédric with this team. He is a good player, important, a technical player and I am sure he will do many good things this season.
