On a duel that we ran earlier today on this site, we asked the Southampton supporters who they believed to be the club’s greatest ever right-back from a variety of good options, past and present.
However, despite the volume of talent within the options, the Saints faithful chose club legend Jason Dodd as their choice for the club’s best right-back to pull on the red and white shirt.
Dodd took an impressive 82% of votes, beating older player Ivan Golac and most recently departed right-back Nathaniel Clyne to the award. Golac came second with a respectable 68%, whereas Clyne, now at Liverpool, gained 67% of the votes.
Dodd made an incredible 398 appearances for the Saints and went on to be part of the academy set-up at the club, nurturing players such as Gareth Bale and Luke Shaw who have gone on to great success away from Southampton.
The former right-back, who surprisingly never made an appearance for England, now joins legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton in the fans’ best ever Southampton team, as the ex-England man won a large amount of the votes in yesterday’s duel.
Look out for another duel on the site tomorrow, as we look at another player that will be named in Southampton’s best ever team by you.
