According to developing reports from Dutch news outlet de Telegraaf, former Southampton winger Eljero Elia has been arrested on suspicion of assault after it was revealed that the Dutchman was involved in a brawl last Thursday.
The incident took place in a VIP nightclub in Rotterdam just hours after he helped Feyenoord to reach the final of the KNVB cup as his side beat AZ Alkmaar in the semi-finals.
However, when out celebrating the victory, Elia is said to have assaulted a man in a ‘business related’ incident but has only just handed himself in for the crime, his lawyer Jan Kabalt can confirm.
Eljero received a call from the police to be heard and reported himself to the police.
Elia, just three days after his reported assault in the bar, did start for Feyenoord yesterday as they continued their improved run of form with a 3-1 win over Cambuur; a game in which Elia scored.
The experienced winger spent six months on loan with Southampton and scored two goals during his tenure at the club last season, before signing permanently for Eredivise outfit Feyenoord last summer from Werder Bremen.
Although Elia does indeed possess a reputation for being involved with the police a lot, due to crashing cars at Werder Bremen in the past, no new developments have come about from de Telegraaf, nor any other Dutch news outlet, to confirm Elia’s situation.
