Southampton were unable to turn the tide of their current form as they slumped to their third consecutive game without a win after Sunderland managed to keep them at bay with a 1-1 draw.
It was a highly difficult game throughout, with both sides finding clear-cut chances hard to come by as both sets of defences managed to keep their opposition quiet in the large parts of the match.
The turning point came when Jose Fonte was dismissed with less than twenty minutes to play after committing a foul on Fabio Borini, which referee Neil Swarbrick deemed to be a goal-scoring opportunity denied.
Jermain Defoe then pounced on a defensive error from the Saints backline just five minutes from time to give the visitors a crucial goal and a lead as they looked to continue their good form and push for survival.
However, Southampton were fortunate enough to level the scoring three minutes deep into injury time as the excellent Virgil van Dijk fired in a left-footed drive to salvage a point for Saints.
