It was a disappointing afternoon on the south coast for Ronald Koeman’s men as they slumped to their first defeat in seven games at the hands of a resurgent Chelsea side in a 2-1 defeat at St Mary’s.
Saints got off to a good start in the tie, pressing Chelsea well and showing early signs of intent. Their efforts were repaid just before half time as Shane Long’s heavy touch allowed him to deftly dink the ball beyond the reach of Thibaut Courtois and into the Belgian’s far right corner.
However, as Chelsea upped the tempo and pushed Southampton to their limits defensively, they responded with two goals late on from Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanovic to clinch a crucial three points.
