Over recent years, Southampton have been highly renowned for their excellent, efficient dealings in the transfer markets that have come about.
Whether it has been making the largest possible profit from a player that they are selling or unearthing a gem from other European leagues, the scouting network and recruitment system has been of the highest order.
However, very few players at the club have been brought in for absolutely no transfer fee whatsoever, and with the wealth of talent that could potentially be available to them in the summer, we could very well see a change in that fact.
Here are four players that are available on a free this summer who I feel as though Southampton should look to move for.
Sofiane Feghouli
One player that Saints should definitely move for is Sofiane Feghouli. Although there is high competition for the Algerian in the summer due to the lucrative availability of the winger, he would be a perfect potential replacement for Sadio Mane if he is to leave the club.
Ever Banega
During Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at the club, attacking midfielder Ever Banega was always a rumoured target. However, with the Argentinian being available for a move in the summer, he would be a perfect fit at Southampton. Banega is a good option because of his ability to turn a game on its head with an excellently timed pass or long-range effort.
Nicolas N'Koulou
One defender that Southampton could benefit from is Marseille centre-back N’Koulou. Although the Cameroon international is not blessed with the desired height for a centre-back, his defensive awareness and comfortability on the ball would be an asset to Southampton if they are looking to possess depth heading into the possibility of Europe.
Gregory van der Wiel
In order to push on for a strong season, Southampton should look to bolster their right-back options. Cedric Soares is having an impressive debut season in the Premier League, but Cuco Martina’s below-par performances have raised doubts over the right side of the defence and its depth. The signing of van der Wiel would provide European experience, reliability and an attacking threat for the Saints.
