According to a recent report from Talksport, Southampton are among three other Premier League clubs that are looking to bring experienced defender Thomas Vermaelen back to the Premier League.
Vermaelen has found first team chances at Barcelona hard to come by after his £15 million move from Arsenal in the summer of 2014 as a result of niggling injuries and the excellent form of the Catalan giants’ defenders.
If the Saints are to move for the 30-year-old, they will need to be fast and come in with an acceptable offer due to the amount of interest that is being taken in Vermaelen. Talksport reports that top flight trio West Ham, Liverpool and reigning Premier League champions Chelsea are all interested in moving for the Belgian.
Vermaelen is also said to be looking for a move away from the Nou Camp in the summer, according to news source Fichajes, favouring a return to the English game, putting all four clubs of interest on high alert.
The centre-back’s natural ability cannot be doubted, despite his age and lack of game time in recent times, meaning that he could prove to be a highly intelligent signing on Ronald Koeman’s part at Southampton.
Vermaelen would also be an excellent signing for the Saints if they are to qualify for Europe, as he will offer an experienced head within the squad as well as a more than capable option at the back should injuries or suspensions occur.
