Southampton made it three wins on the bounce yesterday as they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Charlie Austin came off the bench to score on his Saints debut and seal all three points with an emphatic header.
It was also a third clean sheet in as many games for Southampton, which is a massive positive given the previous poor form in a defensive sense.
There were plenty of positives from the game and here are five things we learned:
Austin will be a superb signing
When Austin signed last week from QPR there was much anticipation surrounding his debut. He duly delivered. A fine header with just three minutes to play secured all three points and I am sure there will be many more moments like that this season for the English striker.
Matt Targett has secured a spot in the team
There has been a lot of talk recently of Southampton academy players not being given chances. Well… Matt Targett has been given his chance and he has grasped it with both hands. Targett has taken to the wing-back role superbly and has surely nailed down a spot in the side with recent performances.
The new-look defence is very effective
Ronald Koeman has tinkered with the side for the last three matches. He has played with three central defenders and two wing-backs. This includes Ryan Bertrand playing central defence, which seems to be working wonders. Three clean sheets in three matches proves this.
The Saints have missed Forster
Having come back from a nine month injury lay-off; Southampton fans thought it may take some time for Fraser Forster to settle back in. Not at all. Three clean sheets in all three of his matches this season. It is no coincidence that Southampton have looked more assured at the back with Forster over Maarten Stekelenburg.
The old Wanyama back?
A lot of questions have been asked of Victor Wanyama this season. He was linked with a move away in the summer and handed in a transfer request. His mind seemed to be off the job and performances over the last month have been far from convincing. Yet, he was excellent yesterday and looks like his is rediscovering his best form.
