Fonte signs new contract with Saints

Southampton FC have announced that captain Jose Fonte has signed a new contract at the south coast club.

The Portuguese international defender has signed a new three-year deal that means his contract will now run through into 2018.

Fonte has already been at the club for almost six years and his new deal with take him into a ninth season in a Saints shirt.

A real fans favorite, Fonte has become idolized by many down at Southampton and has become an essential member of the side and a player that manager Ronald Koeman must be delighted to have and delighted to keep for another three seasons at least.

Jose Fonte has featured in over 200 games for Southampton and has a very special connection with the club. One that he is not prepared to let go of anytime soon given this new contract.

Speaking to Southampton’s website, Jose Fonte had this to say:

I’m obviously very pleased and very happy.

I want to thank the manager, Les Reed, Ralph [Krueger], Katharina [Liebherr] – all of the staff and all of the board – for showing their trust and belief in me.

I am extremely happy that they are giving me this opportunity to keep being in this great club, and I hope I can give back with good performances and by helping the club move forward.

This is where I feel happy and where I’ve been very successful, so this is where I want to be and where I want to win.
